Being Green
One of our core values is to exercise environmentally responsible practices. In fact, we have been GREEN since day one, and will continue to do so for our duration. Our GREEN practices begin with our resources, continue through our production process and conclude with our recycling and waste minimization.
Being an environmentally aware company we proudly produce our products using eastern white pine which is harvested from sustainable sources in New England. Each of our suppliers is a member of the Forest Stewardship Council, an International non-profit group that supports responsible forestry management. 50>Being harvested locally reduces carbon emissions produced by trucks during transportation. This means that you can rest assured that the piece you are purchasing is not the result of irresponsible clear cutting forestry such as many of the import hardwoods in use. Furthermore by utilizing real solid wood, our products do not "off-gas" toxic fumes, something that cannot be said about other certain furniture and cabinetry construction materials.
In the process of making furniture, we strive to be environmentally conscience every step of the way. Once the wood arrives at our shop, we continue to be GREEN by limiting our waste. Small pieces of wood cut off from the ends of big boards are recycled in a variety of ways. Some are used to make things such as step stools and small drawers while others are donated to local elementary schools for use with their students.
Sawdust created by our tools is regularly donated to local farms for bedding.
During the colder months, cut-offs are also used to heat our workshop with a highly-efficient wood furnace. This prevents the burning of hundreds of gallons of fossil fuel each year.
At Bostonwood we are always interested in improving the environment and are in the process of researching several ways to further reduce the carbon footprint of our company.
